Work/Life/Cancer Balance

I’m A cll survivor as well as bladder cancer survivor, both are in remission. I receive IVIG about every 6 weeks. My fatigue is really bad. I’m 69 in February and really don’t want to retire yet. How do I ask my company to allow me to work a shorter day? I would not expect the same salary, I feel like it’s either this option or just retire. I’m in sales. Thanks

Hi Stephen,


Thanks so much for reaching out to Cancer and Careers. It makes total sense that you need to make a change with work without being ready to retire as of yet. Have you spoken to your supervisors about this at all? Perhaps there are part-time roles or roles with slightly less responsibility? We have a few resources that might spark some ideas or approaches for you to take:



  • If you haven't already, I'd recommend looking into the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and explore your options for a reasonable accommodation. You can find more information about the ADA and Reasonable Accommodations in the Legal & Financial section of our website, in particular the articles on Your Legal Rights in the Workplace: Cancer and the ADA, FMLA, etc. and Requesting Reasonable Accommodations


    • A great external resource for learning more about the ADA, RA's, and how to request them is the Job Accommodation Network


  • Our article on Flexible Work may also be helpful for you to think through what your needs will be and what would work best for you

  • The ability to communicate your needs and wants in this process can be critical. Take a look at the recording of our webinars on Communicatin Effectively Part I and Part II for insight into navigating conversations that may feel intimidating. 

  • Our Managers Toolkit may also be helpful to bring into conversations with your boss to outline some primary factors your manager should know about to help them better understand your circumstances.
