Lina Courtois, aged 72, competed in the Canadian Artistic Swimming Championship where she won silver and gold medals. The week before she took gold in the 100-metre butterfly and 400-metre individual medley at the Canadians Masters Swimming Championships. All of this amid chemotherapy treatments.

Award-winning Singaporean actress Janice Koh was diagnosed with oral cancer 10 months ago. She first noticed an ulcer on her tongue that wasn't going away. After two surgeries, more than half her tongue has been removed, complicating her ability to speak clearly.

Linda O'Brien continued to work full-time during her treatment for breast cancer. In October 2019, O'Brien had shingles due to her weakened immune system. In order to protect a pregnant co-worker, she asked to work from home until she recovered. Two days later she was fired.

Georgie Johnston landed her dream job as a nurse after years of studying and volunteering. A few months later she was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer, requiring chemotherapy and a mastectomy.

Raleigh, NC firefighter John Nickerson returned to Station 17 after fifteen months away treating testicular germ cell cancer. He went through two surgeries, chemotherapy and three stem cell transplants. While his treatment was not easy, Nickerson said, "The hardest part was being away from my family and my job."
