Balancing Work & Cancer Webinar: Balancing Work & Caregiving

Caring for a loved one with cancer can include as many components as a regular job. The challenge is to meet these many responsibilities while preserving energy for yourself and your family. Join this webinar to learn about considerations when navigating caretaking responsibilities and employment.  

Topics covered include: 

  • Integrating self-care that works for you while balancing your job and caregiving
  • Best practices for creating an action plan that may help you feel more in control of your various responsibilities as a working caregiver
  • Thinking through workplace disclosure conversations and other tips for communicating effectively with employers and coworkers

Speaker

Nicole Jarvis, LMSW, Assistant Director of Programs, Cancer and Careers

Nicole Jarvis joined the team in October of 2015. As Assistant Director of Programs, she oversees the Financial Assistance Grant Program, Regional Conferences, Ask a Career Coach message board and accreditation. Nicole also provides direct support and referrals to the many patients, survivors and healthcare professionals who reach out to the organization via phone and email as well as presenting on employment topics to patient and healthcare groups in the cancer in community.

Nicole received her Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with a focus on women’s health. While in Madison, she was actively involved with Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin, pursuing work on legislative issues related to access to reproductive healthcare. Following graduation, she worked at Memorial Sloan Kettering for four years in the chemotherapy unit and for a renal oncologist, until attaining her Master of Social Work degree from Hunter College, in 2013. Nicole worked as a social worker in the child welfare arena, advocating for parents in family court, prior to joining Cancer and Careers.

6:00 PM – 6:05 PM ET: Welcome, Speaker Introduction

6:05 PM – 6:50 PM ET: Overview of considerations for navigating caretaking responsibilities and employment

6:50 PM – 7:00 PM ET: Questions

Learning Objectives

  • Attendees will be able to describe the impact of caregiving responsibilities on a caregivers job.
  • Attendees will be able to identify best practices for information gathering and organization in order to create a plan for balancing work and caregiving responsibilities.
  • Attendees will be able to give examples of strategies for caregivers to communicate at work, including disclosure and collaborating with supervisors and coworkers.

Credits Information

One (1) continuing education credit will be provided free of charge to eligible oncology nurses, social workers, and HR professionals upon approval from the agencies listed below.

Social Workers

  • This program is approved by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work (Approval #0072) for 1 continuing education hour.
  • Cancer and Careers, #1814, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Cancer and Careers maintains responsibility for this course. ACE provider approval period: 06/10/2023 – 06/10/2026. Social workers completing this course receive 1 continuing education credits.

Oncology Nurses

  • Provider approved by the State of California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP 16673, for 1 continuing education credit per session.

HR Professionals

  • Cancer and Careers is recognized by SHRM to offer Professional Development Credits (PDCs) for the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP. This program is valid for 1 PDC per session for the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP. For more information about certification or recertification, please visit www.SHRM.org.
