Meghan Schiller - October 2026
Emily Di Cocco, a fifth grade teacher who took three years off to focus on treatment for brain cancer, has returned to the classroom. She was diagnosed with a grade 3 astrocytoma cancerous tumor after experiencing a grand mal seizure. Two of her first questions to her doctor were "how am I going to get back to being a mom?" and "how am I going to get back to work?"
Di Cocco underwent surgery to remove the tumor, followed by chemotherapy and radiation. Last December she received a text from her principal asking if she wanted to come back to work, and she said yes. She had been sharing her story on social media and amassed a large following, including former students cheering her on. "The students that I was once cheering on and supporting found me on social media now and were commenting on my videos now in high school or in college, cheering me on, just encouraging me, and so when I got this text from [my principal], I was like 'this is a sign, I'm being called back here' and now I'm here today."
