Mary C. Dillon - August 2025
Holly Thornton was in her junior year of college studying to be a nurse when she was diagnosed with cancer. When she received her diagnosis she was worried she might have to take a break from school. "Not only did I not want to give up on my dream of becoming a nurse, I didn’t want to lose my close-knit cohort of friends that had gotten me through all of the trials of school thus far. I also felt like I needed something besides cancer to focus on."
She was able to keep up with schoolwork by attending classes when she could and keeping her professors up-to-date when she couldn't. Some allowed her flexibility on exams to work around her treatment schedule. By this past December she was cancer free and graduated on time in May.
