Shauna Bernard - November 2025
Joanne Foley is a chiropractor who owns and operates her own clinic. She was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma last spring, after a previous diagnosis of thyroid cancer seven years earlier. Because she runs her own business, there was no access to paid leave or sick time. She managed to keep working by taking four days off after each treatment, which happened ever 3 weeks, scheduling shorter shifts, taking longer breaks for lunch and in between each patient.
"Having my work has been really good for my mental health. If I had sick leave somewhere else, maybe I wouldn’t be working, but I don’t think sitting at home would have worked for me...It’s kept me off the internet and stopped me from doomscrolling. I’m just living my life like I was before, and that has gotten me through a lot of it."
