It can be hard to find the words to say when a colleague becomes chronically or seriously ill. Per Cancer and Careers' Executive Director, Rebecca Nellis, it's possible that you think you're doing the right thing when you're actually adding pressure to the person with the diagnosis. She, and Lynn Taylor a workplace expert and author, suggest a number of ways to support your co-worker including: showing empathy, letting them guide you, respecting their privacy, and offering help with work tasks, to name a few.
