BMX rider Paul Wassenaar is returning to the pro circuit after being diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma at age 19, reports USA Today. The diagnosis put his BMX career on hold, but Wassenaar continued to ride his bike through treatment, saying that it actually helped him get through chemo.
Following his diagnosis, Wassenaar was supposed to stop riding. But as he tells USA Today, even though chemotherapy made him feel extremely sick, he realized that when he got on his bike, “it helped the chemo go through my body a little quicker.” Wassenaar credits riding and exercise as helping him get through his cancer treatment.
