ABC News 7 Denver covered the story of a Chick-fil-A employee who claims she was demoted by her employer after she she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to take medical leave for a double mastectomy. Initially following Daphne Richards' diagnosis and while she was on leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act, the store was supportive. "Even though she didn't qualify for continuing benefits during her work hiatus under the Family Medical Leave Act, the store continued to pay for her health insurance coverage during her medical leave."
When Richards was cleared by her doctor to go back to work, the store owner told her they no longer had a full-time management position for her, and that she would no longer be able to get healthcare benefits from them.
Workplace discrimination against cancer survivors is unfortunately not unheard of, as this story demonstrates. Here are some tips on handling discrimination at work.
