KSFM 5 News shares the story of teacher and volleyball coach Rose Cheek who was diagnosed with stage three colon cancer and had to take time off from work for treatment. She went through 7 months of chemo before being told she was cancer free and could return to the bench. The article explains how difficult it was for Cheek to be away from her team and her work:
"For a person who has worked every day in her life, now she had to work to save her life. 'I never took a sick leave,' Cheek said. 'I never took a sick day, I never even took a personal day.' For the first time in 33 years, coach Cheek had to quit coaching."
She uses her cancer experience in her coaching now, explaining how she had to fight and using this to inspire her players to fight through their games.
