For the most part, it is all about making sure you include keywords they may be looking for when filling any particular position. There is a great tip sheet here for ways to optimize your resume for scanning: http://www.career.und.edu/CareerServices/ResumeKeyword.pdf.
Also do keep in mind that only some companies use resume scanning; it all depends on the type of industry you are applying for jobs in. I hope this helps!
