Sporting News reports that Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta played the first month of the 2014–2015 NHL season with cancer. He recently underwent surgery to remove a thyroid tumor but was back on the ice, practicing with the team, just nine days later. Penguins coach Mike Johnston says Maatta will likely miss another couple of weeks but has a good prognosis.
