Paid Time Off (PTO) Policy Checklist
If Human Resources is charged with developing a new Paid Time Off (PTO) policy, there are a number of issues that will have to be addressed. Here is a checklist of questions that you'll need to answer:
- What will be included in the PTO program? Most programs include vacation, sick leave and personal leave. Do you also want to include paid holidays? Bereavement leave?
- How many hours per week will an employee have to work to be eligible to receive PTO?
- Will employees begin to accrue PTO on their first day of employment, or will there be a waiting period?
- How much PTO will a new hire accrue the first year?
- How many years will an employee have to work to reach the next level of accrual?
- How much PTO can an employee carry over from one year to the next?
- Will an employee accrue PTO while on disability leave or another leave of absence?
- What is the procedure for requesting PTO?
- How and where does PTO get recorded?
