MARTIN ABELOFF, MD

The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine

Dr. Abeloff is the Eli Kennerly Marshall, Jr. Professor of Oncology, Director of the Johns Hopkins Oncology Center, and Oncologist-in-Chief of the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health Systems in Baltimore Maryland. He is a medical oncologist whose major research focus has been the management of solid tumors, particularly those located in the breast or lung. He received his M.D. degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1966 and subsequently completed his residency training in internal medicine at the University of Chicago and the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. In addition, he received research training in hematology and oncology at the New England Medical Center and the NCI-Baltimore Cancer Research Center respectively. In 1972, Dr. Abeloff joined the faculty at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine where he served as Director of Medical Oncology, Clinical Direction, and Head of the Medical Oncology Training Program. He currently holds academic appointments in the Departments of Oncology and Medicine in the School of Medicine and the Department of Environmental Health Sciences in the School of Hygiene and Public Health.

Kathy S. Albain, M.D.

Kathy S. Albain, M.D. is Professor of medicine at the Stritch School of Medicine of Loyola University Chicago. She is a member of the Division of Hematology/Oncology, Loyola University Medical Center, and devotes her clinical practice to patients with breast and lung cancer at Loyola's Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center. She is director of its Breast Cancer Research program, co-director of the multidisciplinary Breast Care Center, and director of the Thoracic Oncology program. Dr. Albain is involved in national research and advisory activities pertaining to breast and lung cancer as well as cancer survivorship and special populations research. She chairs the Committee on Women and Special Populations for the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG), a National Cancer Institute-sponsored cancer clinical trials cooperative group. Dr Albain is a member of SWOG's working groups for lung and breast cancer as well as the National Cancer Institute Intergroup committees for both diseases. She is a member of the international Early Breast Cancer Trialists' Collaborative Group and the National Cancer Institute Concept Evaluation Panel for lung cancer. She was a charter member of the NIH Committee on Research on Women's Health and is a current member of the Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee of the FDA.

KAREN E. ANDREWS, ESQ.
Associate General Counsel, Time Inc.
As Associate General Counsel, Mrs. Andrews is responsible for all legal matters for In Style and Real Simple magazines, Time Inc. Custom Publishing and Time Inc. Television. Prior to joining Time Inc. in 1990, Karen was a Litigation Associate at the New York law firm of Weil, Gotshal & Manges where she specialized in Entertainment Litigation. Karen is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (the "MMRF") which she founded in 1996 after her identical twin sister, Kathy Giusti, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a bone marrow cancer. The MMRF is dedicated to raising awareness of myeloma; funding research and fostering collaboration among researchers and industry; and raising research monies to find a cure. The MMRF has raised over six million dollars and hosts a Website at www.multiplemyeloma.org.

KAREN ANTMAN, MD
Chief, Division of Medical Oncology, Columbia University

Dr. Antman is the Wu Professor of Medicine at Columbia University and the Director of Columbia's Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center. She joined the Harvard Medical School faculty in 1979 and served as the Clinical Director of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Solid Tumor Autologous Marrow Program and of the sarcoma and mesothelioma clinical research and treatment programs until July of 1993. Her research accomplishments include the development of now standard regimens for the treatment of sarcomas and mesotheliomas and she has also developed high dose regimens for high risk breast cancer that are currently in randomized trials in the US and Europe. Dr. Antman has published reviews and editorials on the impact of research funding and managed care on the American clinical research endeavor, and is an author of more than 130 peer reviewed articles, more than 100 chapters, and edited 2 text books and is Associate Editor of the New England Journal.

DEBORAH AXELROD, MD, FACS
Director of Clinical Breast Services and Breast Surgery and Medical Director of Community Cancer Education and Outreach at New York University’s Clinical Cancer Center
Dr. Deborah Axelrod is Director of Clinical Breast Services and Breast Surgery and Medical Director of Community Cancer Education and Outreach at NYU’s new Clinical Cancer Center in New York City and a board certified surgeon who specializes in breast diseases and breast cancer. She is Associate Professor of Surgery at New York University School of Medicine. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Axelrod completed a surgical oncology research fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. She is widely published in her field and has been in practice since 1988. She is a prominent speaker throughout the country, presenting to both lay and professional audiences information on new developments in risk-reduction measures, detection and treatment of breast cancer. She is currently participating in protocol research studies on sentinel node biopsy and conservative management of intra-ductal cancer(DCIS) - on wide excision only. Always at the forefront of patient advocacy, Dr. Axelrod is active nationally and in the community- dedicated to educating the public about breast cancer and the need to take an active role in one's own health care. She is on the Board of Directors at SHARE (self-help Group for Women with Breast or Ovarian Cancer) in New York City, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, New Jersey Chapter, and is active in NABCO (national Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations). She has been appointed to the Medical Resource Council at the Gilda's Club in New York City (a cancer support community for people with cancer and their families).

DIANE BLUM
Executive Director, Cancer Care Inc.
Diane Blum is Executive Director of Cancer Care Inc., a national nonprofit agency which, for more than 55 years, has provided emotional support, information, education, financial assistance, and practical help to people with cancer, their loved ones and professionals. Prior to joining Cancer Care in 1984 as director of social services, Ms. Blum served as a social work supervisor at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Co-founder of the National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations, Ms. Blum is a founder of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Senior Editor of ASCO Online, and a board member of the of the Cure for Lymphoma Foundation and the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. Additionally, she is a member of the Association of Oncology Social Workers, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the National Association of Social Workers. Her recent awards include the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Board of Sponsors of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Special Recognition Award from the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, the Republic Bank Breast Cancer Research Foundation Award, and the Special Recognition Award of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

SHELDON H. CHERRY, MD

Dr. Sheldon H. Cherry has built a national reputation as a researcher in the women's health field. He is an Attending Obstetrician and Gynecologist at New York's Mount Sinai Hospital, and maintains a private office on Park Avenue. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the New York Obstetrical Society, American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Cherry is the Senior Editor of a classic medical textbook now in its fourth edition and has authored many peer review papers and several books on women's health. His books have been published in England, Canada, Spain, Israel and Russia. He has appeared on Good Morning America, The Today Show, and others, and has been a columnist for Parents magazine.

ELIZABETH CRUTCHFIELD
Fitness Expert, President, Homebodies


Elizabeth Crutchfield began her fitness career in 1973 with a background in classical ballet and gymnastics. HOMEBODIES was originally established in 1984 with a strong focus on dance movement and pilates. Elizabeth acquired HOMEBODIES in 1993 introducing a greater fitness orientation including weight and sports specific training, kickboxing, agility and balance training. Elizabeth is certified with the American Council of Exercise and is a member of IDEA. She regularly lectures at fitness seminars and has consulted for Vogue, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Shape, Self and The NY Times. She is an advisory board member of Cosmetic Executive Women's www.cancerandcareers.org. Sharing her education with her staff of trained professionals, Elizabeth concentrates on staying abreast of current developments in fitness while permitting her trainers to incorporate their own ideas as they work individually with each client.

CAROLYN J. DEAVER
Vice President, Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association (CTFA) Foundation/Look Good...Feel Better
Carolyn J. Deaver joined the CTFA Foundation as Vice President in January 1991. As Vice President of the Foundation, she directs the Foundation and Look Good...Feel BetterB., a national, public service program dedicated to helping women cancer patients cope with the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment. The program has served over 260,000 women since it was launched in 1989. Look Good...Feel Better is the partnership supported by the cosmetic industry, the national Cosmetology Association and the American Cancer Society. The CTFA Foundation is based in Washington DC.

She joined CTFA from the US Department of State where she served as Assistant Chief of Protocol. Prior to that she held the position of Director of Special Programs for the Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC. In 1985 she was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to a four-year term as a member of the Commission of Fine Arts. She also serves as a member of the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation which she joined in 1982. The Cafritz Foundation awards grants to charitable, educational and cultural institutions in the metropolitan Washington DC area.

PATRICIA A. GANZ, MD

Dr. Patricia A. Ganz is a medical oncologist who has spent the past 20 years doing systematic research on the health-related quality of life impact of cancer and its treatment. Her research has been sponsored by the National Cancer Institute; the National Institute on Aging, the American Cancer Society, California Division; the Department of Defense, and the Komen Foundation. She has developed a predictive model for the early identification of women at risk for psychosocial distress in the year after breast cancer, and has described the clinical characteristics of these women. She has completed several studies that have examined quality of life in breast cancer survivors, and recently received continued funding from the National Cancer Institute to develop and evaluate an intervention for breast cancer patients who have completed their treatments and are "Preparing for Survivorship." In 1996, Dr. Ganz received an Avon Breast Cancer Leadership Award of $100,000 to support her research on quality of life in breast cancer survivors and in July 1999, Dr. Ganz was awarded an American Cancer Society Clinical Research Professorship. She was also honored with the Komen Foundation Professor of Survivorship Award that same year.

MARC LOEWENBERG, DDS

Alan Matarasso, MD is on the attending staff of Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital and is affiliated with numerous hospitals and teaching programs in New York City, where he is in private practice. He was board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1986 and is a member of over twenty professional organizations including the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Dr. Anne Moore, Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, is Attending Physician at The New York Presbyterian hospital where she chairs the Breast Cancer Committee. She is past director of the American Board of Internal Medicine where she chaired the Hematology Committee from 1996 - 2000. She is a trustee of The New York Academy of medicine and immediate past president of The New York Metropolitan Breast Cancer Group, Inc. KENNETH OFFIT, MD

Dr. Kenneth Offit is the Chief of the Clinical Genetics Services of the Department of Human Genetics at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He is a Professor in the Department of Medicine and Public Health at Cornell University Medical College. After graduate training at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health, he worked for the Environmental Protection Agency before continuing his formal training in oncology and cancer genetics at Memorial. Dr. Offit focuses his research on the genetics of cancer. He has been interested in the interplay between genetic and environment causes of cancer. Dr. Offit directs a clinical program to counsel individuals at hereditary risk for cancer. The goal of these efforts is to prevent cancers with an inherited susceptibility or to detect them at the earliest, most curable stage. Dr. Offit's group identified the most common mutation predisposing to breast and ovarian cancers in individuals of Ashkenzi Jewish background. A large collaborative study led by Dr. Offit identified a specific mutation of the APC gene also associated with breast cancer risk in Ashkenazi individuals. Dr. Offit is the Chair of the Sub-Committee on Cancer Genetic Testing of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and a member of the Cancer Genetics Working Group of the National Cancer Institute.

Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the Center for Clinical Cancer Genetics, Dr. Funmi Olopade directs a multidisciplinary clinical and laboratory research program in cancer genetics at the University of Chicago Medical Center. This program helps speed the transfer of basic research in cancer genetics to the benefit of people. Dr. Olopade is a national leader in the emerging field of clinical cancer genetics--a field that seeks to identify and understand the various genes that contribute to cancer, how these genes interact with one another and how they are affected by environmental factors. Her current laboratory research is focused on tumor suppressor genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 that predispose to breast and ovarian cancers. As a Hematologist/Oncologist, Dr. Olopade specializes in the management of women at high risk for breast cancer. Dr. Olopade has delivered over 100 lectures on topics including breast cancer and genetic testing. Her contributions to the professional literature include more than 100 articles, book chapters, and abstracts on topics including the genetics of breast cancer, and serving as reviewer for several journals, including the Journal of Clinical Oncology and the New England Journal of Medicine.

Ruth Oratz is Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at New York University School of Medicine. She has recently relocated to Colorado where she is affiliated with the University of Colorado. Dr. Oratz is a board certified medical oncologist who specializes in breast diseases, breast cancer and individuals at high risk for breast cancer. A fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Oratz graduated from Radcliffe College/Harvard University and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She then completed her post-doctoral training in internal medicine and medical oncology at the New York University School of Medicine in New York. RITA RIVEST

Rita Rivest began her career in fitness and wellness over 25 years ago. After serving as program director for Rancho La Puerta, a well-known spa in California, she successfully launched health and fitness studios for women, in the Midwest. In New York, she developed a large private fitness practice. Her clients were primarily active, involved women. Rita has taught countless women to re-evaluate the quality of their time and how to replace habits that don't work with ones that do. JOHN C. RUCKDESCHEL, MD

Dr. Ruckdeschel is an internationally recognized leader in the field of medical oncology, particularly lung cancer. Dr. Wood-Smith is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.
